I had a listener ask me for my opinion on using Free Media hosts such as Podbean.com While I understand that some times there is no budget and free is your only option. For the record, podbean has some nice features and they make things easy. I also know people who have grown in and out of podbean (and moving is no fun). If free is your only option then I would recommend www.mevio.com (although they may insert ads into your show, and you won’t get paid. However, you are getting free bandwidth, storage, and stats).

I look at it like moving into a house. You can move into a starter house with one bedroom, etc. Then later if your family grows you can move into a bigger house. If you had the chance, and could afford it, wouldn’t rather skip step one? After all moving all your stuff is no fun.

Likewise when you set up a podcast on a free account, in some cases they set up an RSS feed for you (bad) and set up your iTunes listing for you (very bad), and then you are set with limitations (storage, etc). In other words, you get what you pay for.

If you can afford $10 a month for hosting your website (I use Hostgator - affiliate link), and $12 a month at Libsyn.com then that would be the route I would go. In some cases I’ve seen people host both their website and their media on Host Gator. This works, but you will have to struggle to get some stats, and if you get really popular you will be asked to move your media.

The other thing to consider is many free sites go out of business (forcing you to move again). If you can avoid it, I would. People go in with a negative attitude. They say, “What if nobody listens?” To this I ask, “But what if they do?! – you will want a more powerful site with more features.”

Plan to be successful. You’ll be surprised how quickly you can grow an audience with a little promotion.

(http://www.wpaffiliateelite.com/images/banners/125_125_monetize.jpg)This is a pretty cool plugin for wordpress. It's called Affiliate Elite (http://weeklywebtools.com/likes?wpaffiliateelite). You can set up keywaords to link to certain pages. Once you set this up, you just type the words and the links are created. This will save you time, and if you're trying, make you money.

Use Headings

When using wordpress, click on the icon to show two sets of formatting buttons and use the format such as heading 3. The big bonus for a site impaired person is they can jump from heading to heading in their software that reads the screen to them.

Use “Alt” Text on Images

This is the “pop up” text that shows up when you hover your mouse over and image. This helps explain what the picture is for those who can’t see it. This will also help you with search engines.

When you use alt text on links you can write something like “Buy this product at amazon.com” so a persion who is site impaired know what to expect if they click on that link

The great thing about podcasting is its getting big enough for companies to start building tools for podcasters. Today we look at the Audio Lite system from Gigavox (the makers of the Levelator). www.gigavox.com

You can record your podcast in segements. Then (if needed) you can update certain segments (like an advertiser spot) in the current AND PAST podcasts. I’m using this not for advertisers, but for a non-profit (my church). Instead of having advertising spots rotate in and out, we use it for our calendar, and prayer concerns (items that chance from week to week). This way people are up to date with the latest news (no matter what episode they listen to). In reality your podcast can be evergreen. The information can be updated in past shows. The good news is its free to use. Take some time to think about it and how you want your podcast to go from section to section. I love it. Oh yeah. IT’s FREE.

The “bad” news is it doesn’t work with Libsyn (it does with the more expensive Libsyn Pro). So I looked at some different web hosts that had unlimited bandwidth (like Midphase.com ) and ended up with Dreamhost.com (as they increase your storage and bandwidth the longer you stay on their system). I will keep you in the loop as we move forward.

<itunes:summary>Today I went and looked at some numbers regarding people using phones to listen to the School of Podcasting's Morning Announcements. I use voiceindigo.com and I had anywhere from 15 to 47 downloads a month. I also looked at how many people used the link shownotes.schoolofpodcasting.com and since April 100 people have used that link (which typically is not in print like today, but only heard in the podcast). So people ARE going to links they listen to.

Today I explain how I received my second microphone arm (the one that cost $39 on ebay and it works better than the one I got for $29). However, now with my computer closer to my microphone I’ve decided to put some foam around the computer (leaving it room to “breathe”) to cut back on the noise. The lesson learned?
