Your Podcast Name Carries Lots of Weight

Studies show that 80 percent of what we read is based on the headline. The name of your podcast is often the “Headline” that catches the eye of potential listeners and viewers. With this in mind we shouldn’t over-analyze the name of our podcast, and we shouldn’t use a “What the heck” approach either. Many times I’ve started with seeing what domain names are available.

Here are some tips for naming your podcast:

1. You want your show to be obvious, so avoid “inside jokes.”

I had a podcast called “The Musicians Cooler.” The thought being that it was like musicians standing around a water cooler swapping marketing ideas. The fact that I had to keep explaining what the podcast was about showed me that I needed a new name. My podcast about podcasting is called the “Morning Announcements” to tie in with the School of Podcasting. It’s an inside joke. Most people who see it for the first time would never guess “The Morning Announcements” is about podcasting.

2. Check to See if Your Podcast Name is being Used in Other Places

Rich Palmer had the Miami Valley Music Cast. Unfortunately “musiccast” was trademarked and Rich got a cease and desist letter (even though his was two words). I had another person who wanted to start a podcast that the podcast name would be the same as the local newspaper. You want people to be able to find you, and you want to use words that are obvious and popular. However, you don’t want to use a name that is already in use.

3. See if the Website is Available

I once played in a band called “The Sugar Daddies.” We had to make sure that if we mentioned our website, that people went to THEsugardaddies.com (if they left off the “the” they went to a porn site). You also want the domain name to “roll off the tongue.” If you have to spell it or over-pronounce it, you may want to consider choosing something else. You also want it to be short, easy to remember, and easy to spell. Don’t be discouraged when you find out that the domain you want is already taken. You can always tack on “radio” or “show” to the end of your domain name. Check to see if the domain name is available at schoolofpodcasting.com/domaincheck

4. See What Will Bring More Traffic

If you want to go above and beyond go to Google Keywords and see what words are more popular. For example the phrase fitness gets more traffic than the word diet. If one of these words is interchangeable, why not use the one that people are looking for?
