Media Hosting For Podcasting and Membership Websites

Courtney this is a hard solution to find. With podcasting you need/want stats and lots of unwanted bandwidth (something like Libsyn – use code sopfree to get your first month first). With a memberhsip site you want your media in a location you can lock down tight (like your website host – assuming you don't have a TON of members). Amazon S3 appears cheap, but its not once you get a few episodes under your belt and then you wind up with expensive bandwidth bills. You had mentioned Google drive, but there are no stats and no pricing for bandwidth.  The good news is there are scripts like Magic Members or Digital Access pass that not only protect content, but also protect downloads.  Keep in mind, if soneone REALLY wants to steal your downloads they will (and they weren't going to buy your stuff anyway).

  1. https://www.google.com/settings/storage/ seems to charge only for space, not for bandwidth consumed in upload/download or embeds. It does have the ability to drop in .mov and other formats to embed content that is private, but as you pointed out, doesn’t have stats. I’ve posted on to Google Drive support as well. I want to know what their bandwidth costs for such use might look like. It does make quick work of converting video content into mobile-compliant formats and lands in a Youtube wrapper basically when uploaded via the web.

I’ve also used EasyVideoPlayer (their back-end is still S3 but protects vids) and WishList Member. I’m looking for just 1 storage solution mainly to keep things more simple on what is hosted where. I usually avoid hosting media on the same server as it’s being accessed.

I have a podcast as well, but really need to commit to doing it, not just for a month at a time.

Thanks so much for the thoughts. I’ll keep you posted on Google Drive’s replies about bandwidth costs. I’d love for them to just keep the bandwidth free and use Google Analytics to report the media access. Hopeful!

Thanks Courtney. I like Magic Members a lot more than Wishlist.
