Dave Jackson shares his insights from a week spent at Ecamm Creator Camp 2024, highlighting ten key takeaways that can help podcasters and content creators elevate their craft. One of the standout lessons is the “three F's” approach to presenting: expressing empathy by acknowledging how others feel and sharing personal experiences to guide them. Additionally, he discusses the exciting integration of Zoom with Ecamm, which promises to enhance live streaming capabilities. Dave also emphasizes the importance of community, noting the strong connections formed around Ecamm software, and he reflects on the value of staying at the event's hotel for better networking opportunities. With practical tips and engaging anecdotes, this episode is a treasure trove for anyone looking to grow their podcasting journey.
The Three F's
Daniel Chi (chee) did a presentation on presenting, and he did something I love, and that takes a concept I believe and use and says it in a much better, more impactful, easier-to-understand way. He mentioned the three F's. It goes like this:
I know how you feel, I felt the same way. Here is what I found
This oozes compassion and empathy. So you connect with your audience as they think, “He's just like me,” and then lead them to the conclusion. It's so simple and yet so powerful. Find Daniel Chi at https://www.danielchi.live/. I was lucky enough to go to an Alpaca farm with Daniel, and he's a very cool guy.
Zoom is Going to 1080
There is a cool integration between Zoom and Ecamm, so you can look great in meetings. If you're having difficulty getting people into your livestream, everybody knows how to join a Zoom meeting. When this was announced, the room erupted like a room full of teenage girls, and Taylor Swift had just logged in.
Zoom Remote Settings App
There is also a remote settings app for Zoom, so you can see your guests' settings, input what their settings should be, and they can then accept them (and their settings are changed).
Idiogram is a Cool Tool For AI with Words
In the session with Jeff Seih and Ian Anderson (not the guy from the Jethor Tull) they had a giant list of AI tools. I played with idiogram.ai I put a quick prompt. “I told it, “An illustration of a dark blue square with the “Power of Podcasting” text in white. There are lightning bolts around the text. The background is a dark blue gradient with white lightning bolts.” This is what it spit out:

Daniel Batal's Amazing Coke Analogy
Daniel Batal is a YouTube consultant with an amazing YouTube channel for growing your YouTube channel and learning Davinci Resolve. He shares the world's best analogy of how Coke (as in the soft drink) is the world's best multiple-channel distributor.
In the early days of Coke, when it was in bottles, you might see a vending machine at a gas station or some hot place where thirsty people might be. You would put your money in, and a bottle would come out. You could use the built-in bottle opener right on the door.
Later, you could buy a can of their different flavors from a machine; one can at a time.
You could go to the grocery store and buy a twelve-pack of cans. These weren't cold; they were designed to be taken home and put in the fridge.
There are also 2 liters bottles. 20-ounce bottles. Six pack of 20-ounce bottles.
You meet your audience where they are in the format they need and deliver a consistent product.
Daniel's Way is One Way Achieving Success
I love Daniel's channel, and he shared his insights into YouTube Shorts (he loves and uses them where others say they ruin your channel). As we often say, “You mileage may vary.” He shared lots of slides to back up his strategy. In the end, he ended up with a six-figure sponsorship deal with Black Magic Design, the makers of Davinci Resolve.
Daniel is a Bad Ass
I found his channel a year ago when a company called Wondershare Filmora decided not to honor their lifetime license to their software. Daniel made this public. Filmora decided not to honor their license and instead went after Daniel's channel, demanding a video they sponsored be removed. Daniel shared this on his channel, and let's say Filmora's move of attacking everyone's mentor did not go over well. Filmora finally did the right thing, but not without hinting they might sue people who said things they didn't appreciate. Here is a link to the playlist. It's fascinating.
How to Build a Software Company
Ecamm was created by twin brothers Ken and Glen Aspeslagh. I love that they started with a simple goal of, “building apps to solve problems.” Their website states, “Our strategy: If an app is useful, well designed and properly maintained, it will sell itself, without the need for clever advertising and glitzy marketing.” They were there all week hanging out with their customers. How do you grow your podcast? Find out what people want, and give it to them.
If You Want to Stand Out, Do Something Different.
I attended some events when they first started. They were terrific because everyone got to consume the same content and network with each other. Then (unfortunately) we do our best to keep that “Small feel” while we make them HUGE. Don't get me wrong, I love Podfest and Podcast Movement. I ADORE that Ecamm topped the attendees at 100. I would love to see more events like this (see Podindy.com) to go along with the giant events.
They also had one of the best swag bags.
Speaking of standing out, check out the book Earn It: Unconventional Strategies for Brave Marketers. There are some great ideas of doing things to set yourself apart. It does make it sound like creating an AMAZING show takes work. That's because it does.
There are No Introverts
According to Doc Roc, “An introvert is a person that doesn't like the present company because every one of those people around somebody that they down with or their homies or their spouse or whatever, you cannot get them to shut up.”
Stay at the Hotel
I paid $110/night. The “official” hotel was $180/night. My hotel was between 5 and 10 minutes away. I ended up paying $20-$35/day for uber rides (so I saved $35ish a day or $175). As much as I feel $175 is a chunk of change unless the cheaper hotel is within walking distance, I would stay at the hotel. As this wasn't a major city, one morning, there was no “Cheap Uber,” so I had to book the giant Uber. The fair was around $20, and (apparently) the drivers didn't want to drive 20 minutes for a $20 fair.
