Eavesdrop on a Podcast Coaching Session: Your Path to Podcaster Clarity

Ever Wonder What a Podcast Coaching Call Sounds Like?

Starting a podcast can feel overwhelming, but understanding the essential questions to address can simplify the process significantly. Join me and listen in as I coach Alex Lorre through a consulting call, highlighting crucial considerations for aspiring and established podcasters. From identifying your target audience to defining the goals of your show, this conversation covers the fundamental aspects that every podcaster must contemplate. I emphasize the importance of a clear podcast name that resonates with listeners and conveys the intended content effectively. Additionally, the episode explores monetization strategies, creative formats, and the necessary tools to help your podcast thrive in a competitive landscape.

Throughout the session, I explained the significance of a podcast’s title, advising Lorre to ensure it communicates the essence of the content without leaving potential listeners puzzled. By having a clear, descriptive title can significantly affect discoverability. We discuss the necessity of setting measurable goals for success, pointing out that clarity in vision guides the content creation process and helps evaluate the podcast’s growth over time. We must remember that while passion is the driving force behind podcasting, having a strategic approach is equally vital.

We also discuss monetization strategies tailored to Lorre's niche, introducing him to affiliate marketing and local sponsorship opportunities that resonate with his audience. Alex might also look into building a community around his podcast, suggesting interactive elements that can foster listener engagement and loyalty.

I thought this call covered the core questions needed when launching a podcast. It blends passion with practicality and offers invaluable insights that can guide aspiring podcasters through the complexities of starting their own show. With my tips and guidance, Alex is equipped with practical advice and the inspiration to embark confidently on his podcasting adventure.

How Much Does it Cost to Start a Podcast?

Often it is less than the price of an Xbox (around $300). Both the ATR2100 and Q2u microphones are under $100. You can get a domain for around $20 at Namecheap or Coolerwebsites. You could use Canva to make artwork for free. You can use Audacity for free (although I prefer Hindenburg). If you're doing a solo show, or if everyone you bring on as a guest or co-host WON'T be in the same room with you, you don't need any mixer (although I recommend the Zoom Podtrak P4 as a backup and an interface – but not needed when you start).

I recommend Podpage for your website (so easy, and yet powerful). Regarding media hosts, I love Captivate, but Buzzsprout, Blubrry, RSS.com, and Libsyn are all fine (stay away from Spotify for Podcasters). If you need free, then Red Circle would be my suggestion (I'm not a fan of free media hosts, you often get what you pay for).

What If We Want to Do Video?

When you add a video to the picture, you could use your phone for a camera (instead of the Elgato Webcam Pro, $299) and a GVM Lighting Kit for $150. While Descript edits audio and video, it's 30sih/month. You can use Davinci Resolve for free (it is powerful but has a bit of a learning curve). You can use a tool like Camo to use your camera as a webcam.

How many downloads does it take to make $500 a Month?

If you're using programmatic ads (not host read), paying $5/1000 downloads, and producing four episodes a month with two ads per episode, you need 12,500 episodes per episode. The average number of downloads per episode is 1,141 per Libsyn. This would put you in the top 2% of shows. The median number from Buzzsprout is 28. This is why I feel programmatic ads is one of the worst ways to monetize your show. For more information, see my book.
