Why Start a Free Podcast?

Podcasting has become an increasingly popular medium for content creators, entrepreneurs, and individuals looking to share their ideas, stories, and expertise with the world. Starting a podcast offers many benefits that can positively impact your personal and professional life.

One of the primary advantages of starting a podcast is establishing yourself as an authority figure in your niche. By consistently producing high-quality, informative, and engaging content, you can build a loyal following of listeners who view you as a trusted source of information. This can lead to increased credibility, opportunities for collaboration, and even potential business partnerships. I personally have been hired for three jobs (and many speaking engagements) because of my podcast.

Another significant benefit of podcasting is connecting with a global audience. My first piece of voicemail came from Germany (and I'm in Ohio). Unlike traditional media, podcasts can be accessed by listeners worldwide, allowing you to reach a much broader and more diverse audience than you might be able to with other forms of content creation. This can lead to increased visibility, a more extensive fan base, and the potential to build a thriving community around your podcast.

Podcasting statistics and trends

The podcasting industry has experienced remarkable growth in recent years, with more and more people tuning in to their favorite shows. According to the latest data, the number of podcast listeners worldwide is expected to reach over 500 million by 2024, up from just 287 million in 2020.

This surge in popularity can be attributed to several factors, including the convenience and portability of podcasts, the rise of smart speakers and in-car listening, and the increasing demand for on-demand, personalized content (and the fact that most radio stations in the US suck). Additionally, the COVID-19 pandemic contributed to the growth of the podcasting industry, as more people turned to podcasts as a source of entertainment, education, and connection during the isolation of lockdowns and social distancing measures.

The diversity of podcast topics has also expanded significantly in recent years, with shows covering various subjects, from true crime and sports to personal development and entrepreneurship. This diversity has made it easier for listeners to find content that aligns with their interests and passions, further fueling the growth of the podcasting industry.

Planning your podcast

Before jumping into the technical aspects of starting a podcast, planning and strategizing is essential. This step will help you create a cohesive, engaging podcast that resonates with your target audience. You need to know your WHY and your WHO.

The first step in planning your podcast is to define your niche and target audience. What unique perspective or expertise do you have to offer? What kind of listeners are you hoping to attract? You can tailor your content and marketing efforts to ensure maximum impact by clearly identifying your niche and target audience.

Next, you'll need to decide on the format and structure of your podcast. Will it be a solo show, an interview-style format, or a roundtable discussion? Will the episode length be consistent, or will it vary depending on the topic? Considering these factors will help create a cohesive and engaging listening experience for your audience.

Choosing a podcasting platform

Once you've planned the content and format of your podcast, it's time to choose a platform to host and distribute it. Several free and low-cost options are available, each with its features and benefits.

One of the most popular and widely used podcast hosting platforms is Spotify for Podcasters, which I DO NOT recommend at all. Spotify is all about serving Spority. I instead recommend Red Circle if you MUST go free (their free option is at the bottom of the page). If you've got $20/month in the budget, I would recommend Captivate.

Another popular option Buzzsprout who has a free plan, but your files will eventually be deleted after a certain amount of time. They also convert your files to mono which (as a musician) bugs me.

Recording and editing your podcast

With your podcast planning complete and a hosting platform selected, it's time to start recording and editing your episodes. While the thought of this may seem daunting, there are numerous free and affordable tools available to help you create high-quality audio content.

For recording, you can use a simple smartphone but don't put it on speaker. Hold it up to your mouth as if you're talking to a person (the microphone is surprisingly better than expected). You can use your voice memo tool and then export the file to a location where you can get it. I do not recommend trying to do EVERYTHING on your phone or tablet.

When it comes to editing, several free and user-friendly options are available, such as Audacity, GarageBand (for Mac users). These tools allow you to trim, splice, and enhance your audio recordings, ensuring a polished and professional-sounding final product. I recommend Audacity as it often requires fewer keystrokes to do simple edits.

Creating podcast artwork and intro music

Alongside the content of your podcast, the visual and audio elements of your show can also play a significant role in attracting and engaging your audience. Investing time and effort into creating compelling podcast artwork and attention-grabbing intro music can help your show stand out in a crowded market.

For your podcast artwork, consider creating a simple, eye-catching design that reflects the tone and theme of your show. You can use free design tools like Canva  to create a professional-looking image that will catch the eye of potential listeners.

When it comes to intro music, you can either compose your own or use royalty-free music available from sites like Pixabay, or the Free Music Archive.  A catchy, memorable intro can help establish the mood and branding of your podcast, making it more memorable and recognizable to your audience.

Publishing and promoting your podcast

Once you've recorded, edited, and created your podcast's visual and audio elements, it's time to publish and promote your show. This step is crucial for building an engaged audience and ensuring your podcast reaches the right people.

When publishing your podcast, optimize your episode titles, descriptions, and tags to improve discoverability on platforms like Apple Podcasts and Spotify. Additionally, consider creating a dedicated website or blog for your podcast, where you can host show notes, transcripts, and additional content to enhance the listener experience. Red Circle (like every media host) has an elementary website you can use (and even accept support from your audience). As you're just starting out, this is all you need.

Promoting your podcast is key to building a loyal following. Leverage social media platforms like Twitter, Instagram, and LinkedIn to share your episodes, engage with your audience, and cross-promote with other creators in your niche. You can also consider guest appearances on other podcasts, collaborations with influencers, and targeted advertising to reach a wider audience.

Monetizing your podcast

While starting a podcast can be rewarding and fulfilling, many podcasters also aspire to generate income from their shows. Fortunately, there are several ways to monetize your podcast, even if you're starting out.

One of the most common methods of podcast monetization is through sponsorships and advertising (which typically don't pay much unless you have tens of THOUSANDS of downloads per episode). Additionally, you can explore affiliate marketing, where you earn commissions by promoting products or services that align with your podcast's content and audience. When you pair the right produce with the audience, this can pay much more than ads. If you have a product you love (and fits your audience), see if they have an affiliate program.

Another option for monetizing your podcast is through a subscription or membership model. By offering premium content, exclusive episodes, or additional benefits to your most dedicated listeners, you can create a revenue stream that provides a more direct connection with your audience. If you're starting out, keep in mind that you monetize an audience, not a podcast (and you don't have an audience yet). For more on monetization, see the top five ways to make money with a podcast. I know a bit about podcast monetization.

There are other tools I'll mention later that are free that can help.

How Much Would It Cost if It Wasn't Free?

Instead of using your phone as a microphone, the Samson Q2U is under $100 (and it's a one-time purchase).
Instead of Red Circle or Buzzsprout, Captivate costs $19/month
Instead of using the built-in website from your media host, Podpage websites start at $9/month.
Instead of using Free Music, I might spend $5 for a track at TuneReel.
