Creating a successful podcast takes more than just having a great idea. To ensure that the show resonates with listeners, podcasters must understand their audience and the topics they want to hear. A podcast listener survey is an invaluable tool to help podcasters understand their listeners and create content tailored to them. In this article, we will look at why audience surveys are so crucial for podcasters, as well as some tips on how best to use them.

Why Have a Survey?

1. Advertisers
2. Understanding who listening?
3. Understand what they want
4. To help you deliver more value in your show

Creating Your Podcast Audience Survey

What is the goal of this survey?
You need to understand the purpose of the exercise. For me, I want to get my downloads going up. (They are somewhat flat at the moment).

Why are you creating this survey?
You need to understand why you're doing the survey. For me, I want to ensure I'm talking about the items my audience wants to hear, and that they are receiving value.

What do you hope to accomplish with this survey?
If you know what you are trying to accomplish, that can help you choose what kind of questions to ask.

How will you use the data you are collecting?
This is where you need to know YOUR WHY. The reason for this is you may get feedback from people who are not actually who you are trying to reach, and they will ask you to change your show into something you don't want to do. Thank them for their feedback, and explain that it sounds like your show is not intended for them.

At the first live event, I went to after starting this show, I got multiple people who said the same thing, “Your show is too short.” So I changed my show from 20 minutes to a goal of 45. Why? Because that's the length, my audience was looking for.

Question Tips:

Explain to the recipients why you are doing this survey and how it will benefit THEM.

Start with general questions and then get specific.

If you are doing a sliding scale, make it an even number 1-4 instead of 1-5, as it eliminates the ability to choose the items in the middle.

If you have advertisers ask if people have purchased one of your sponsor's products.

Are you a subscriber/follower?

How did you find the show?

How long have you been listening?

Scheduling questions

Length of episode questions

Where else do they find content like yours (for possible networking opportunities).

Who would make a good guest for the show (or what show should YOU appear on)?

When you know the goal of the survey along with the purpose, etc, you can get a better idea of what questions to include in your podcast audience survey.

No One Size Fits All For Audience Surveys

When it comes od podcast audience surveys, there is no one size fits all. For example, if you have advertisers, you would want to ask about your ads. If you don't have ads, besides asking who your audience would think would be a good sponsor, there isn't much to talk about.

If you're considering doing a private “Crowdfunding” version of the show, you could ask about that, but again, if you're not, then you can see where there is no one size fits all.

I personally don't have ads on this show, so I don't really care how much money you make or if you have kids. If I did have sponsors, I would want that information.
