Beyond Surveys How Real Conversations Grow Your Podcast

You are looking to grow your podcast. Are you confident your podcast content is truly resonating with your audience? Many podcasters assume their content is “fine” without digging deeper. They also are looking to grow their podcast. But there's a powerful way to gain invaluable insights directly from your listeners: Ask them face-to-face.

In this episode, I share a game-changing strategy I recently used at my new job with Podpage. By conducting one-on-one Zoom calls with users, we uncovered crucial feedback that transformed our product. This approach can work wonders for your podcast, too!

The Secret Sauce: Getting Invaluable Listener Insights for a Thriving Podcast

Why Audience Feedback Matters

You might think, “My content is fine. I need more promotion.” Sound familiar? I've heard this countless times from podcasters I've consulted. But here's the truth: even the best content can fall flat if it doesn't resonate with your audience.

This is what my podcast audience wants

The Power of Face-to-Face Feedback

1. Real-Time Reactions

Watching someone navigate your content or platform in real-time is invaluable. You can see where they struggle, what excites them, and what confuses them. It's like having a window into their thought process.

2. Deeper Insights

Unlike written feedback, live conversations allow you to dig deeper. When someone says something intriguing, you can ask follow-up questions on the spot, uncovering layers of insight you might have missed otherwise.

3. Building Relationships

These sessions aren't just about gathering data. They're about connecting with your audience on a personal level. This builds trust and loyalty, turning casual listeners into devoted fans.

How to Implement This Strategy

1. Set Up Easy Scheduling

Use tools like Calendly or TidyCal to let people book time slots that work for them. Make it as frictionless as possible.

2. Create a Safe Space

When someone gives feedback, especially if it's constructive criticism, don't get defensive. Listen actively and thank them for their honesty. Remember, this feedback is gold for improving your podcast.

3. Ask the Right Questions

Start with open-ended questions like, “How did you find out about the podcast?” then “What topics would you love to hear more about?” Let them guide the conversation. Then, ask them if there is something you wish you would STOP doing, be quiet, and let them answer. Don't give them options – don't give them ANYTHING. It will be awkward, but let the longer the awkward silence, the better the answer.

Ask the Right QUestions

4. Ensure You've Communicated

Repeat back their words to make sure you've heard them correctly, and ensure their thoughts were communicated.

5. Follow Up

After the session, send a thank-you note and let them know how their feedback will be used. This shows you value their input and keeps them engaged with your show.

Overcoming Challenges

For the Introverts

Remember, you're still behind a screen. Start with just a few sessions and build up. The insights you gain will far outweigh any initial discomfort. Keep in mind, these people LIKE YOU. Dealing with No-Shows

It happens. People get busy. Don't take it personally. Use that time to work on your podcast or read industry trends. (Tom Webster's “The Audience is Listening” is a great option!)

The 3% Rule

Here's a reality check: Typically, only about 3% of your audience will take action on anything you ask. Whether it's signing up for these feedback sessions or following you from a guest appearance on another show, keep this in mind to set realistic expectations.

But don't let that discourage you. That 3% can provide insights that transform your podcast for the other 97%.

It's Worth It

Getting direct feedback from your audience is like striking gold for your podcast. It's not always easy and might push you out of your comfort zone. But the insights you gain are priceless.

Remember, your podcast isn't just about what you want to say. It's about what your audience needs to hear. And the best way to figure that out is to ask them directly.

So, are you ready to take your podcast to the next level? Set up those feedback sessions, listen with an open mind, and watch your show transform. Your audience is waiting to be heard – all you have to do is give them the chance.
